Ravka is a monarchy nestled between Fjerda and Shu Han, and the three nations have long been at odds along their continually moving borders. Ravka is divided into two armies: the First Army, which is made up of regular soldiers, and the Second Army, which is made up of Grisha warriors led by General Kirigan. The Grisha are the series' equivalent of magicians, however their talents are based on molecular science. Os Alta, the nation's capital, is home to the royal family's Grand Palace and the Second Army's Little Palace house and training site. For many aspects of Ravka's politics, society, language, and aesthetic, Leigh Bardugo looked to 18th-century Tsarist Russia. The majority of the Grisha live in Ravka, where they are frequently discovered as youngsters by roving Grisha testers and brought to the Little Palace to train as Second Army members. Grisha have been persecuted in Ravka in the past, but due to their importance as soldiers in Ravka's conflicts, they are now regarded elite members of society.
