Belgrade (Serbian Beograd/meaning white city) is Serbia's capital and biggest city (1,576,124 inhabitants). It is one of Europe's oldest towns, having been founded by the Celts in the third century BC and later becoming the Roman colony of Singidunum. In 878 AD, the term Beograd (Belgrade) was first used. [reference required] Since 1404 it has been the capital of Serbia; from 1918 to 2003, it served as the capital of Yugoslavia, as well as Serbia and Montenegro. Since May 2006, Belgrade has been the capital of the Republic of Serbia, since R.Montenegro and R.Serbia are no longer members of the union.
