At times, the film reminded me of the first three Indiana Jones films, and not only because the conclusion features runaway trains on parallel lines and the bad guy removing a man's heart from his chest (this atrocity mirrored and abstracted in a witness's eyeball). As with the Indiana Jones filmsâand as with "Silverado," which had a Spielbergian sensibility while not being directed by Spielbergâthis "Ranger" is an overproduced cliffhanger with very twentieth-century means. Gore Verbinski, the film's director, considers what is in and what is out of frame, as well as when and why the camera will move. (Watch for the pan-up from Helena Bonham Carter's one-legged brothel madam to her young lady picture.) And in an era when most blockbusters operate in a single mode, the steroid-fueled sprint, this "Ranger" allows its characters time to breathe and thinkâperhaps too much time, given the film's complex, stop-and-start middle part; but still!
Season 5: Four DVDs, featuring ten episodes on the first three and nine on the fourth. The audio/video quality is same to that of the previous seasons (except of course they are now in color, and appear to be videotape transfers). Each run lasts around 22:30 minutes, with a couple running closer to 23 minutes. I compared these prints to Rhino's Season 5 package, and although both had the same run durations (22:30-23:00), the Rhino episodes appear better simply because they were compressed far less (that set had about 5 episodes to a disc, compared to the 10 on these). Additionally, the Rhino episodes included many chapter breaks, but this collection has no such pauses. In terms of the season 3-5 episodes, I did not notice any time compression or acceleration in the audio or visual, as I experienced with previous seasons.
The Lone Ranger—An Introduction
I spent my childhood watching "The Lone Ranger" on television. As an adult Baby Boomer, I'm reliving my youth by purchasing DVDs of my favorite childhood television shows. And I'm having a great time watching them. This is an excellent one. The quality is excellent, which is not usually the case with episodes that originally broadcast more than 50 years ago. This DVD contains the pilot episode as well as numerous additional early episodes. While some of the settings are blatantly false (The Lone Ranger and Tonto often seemed to be camped out in front of the same mound of rocks and fake tree branches), the screenplay and performances are rather outstanding. Numerous character performers will be making their professional debuts. And it's a delight to watch shows in which right and evil are clearly defined and everyone is aware of the proper course of action. Always, good prevails over evil. Clayton Moore spent his life according to the moral principles depicted in this series. Perhaps if more of us followed his lead, our world would be a better place. The acting is excellent, and the tale is compelling, but there are some graphic sequences. Unfortunately, the film takes some of the distressing moments too far, culminating in a slaughter of Native Americans. And, certainly, they could have shortened the film by 30 minutes.

Nonetheless, towards the film's conclusion, Tonto's moral fortitude, along with John's idealism and confidence in the law, form the Ideal Hero partnership. John also progresses through a few stages.

Together with this five-disc set of the color television episodes, they offer an excellent collection for anybody who like straightforward, colorful westerns devoid of current excesses of violence and cruelty.)
On September 15, 1949, the ABC network aired The Lone Ranger, the first of a three-part show chronicling the history of the renowned masked hero of the West.
It was one of the first television western shows, along with William Boyd's Hopalong Cassidy, which premiered on NBC on June 24, 1949. Hopalong Cassidy made his television debut on NBC in 1948, when Boyd syndicated his flicks. (Boyd acquired the rights to his Hoppy pictures in 1947.)

Later in the film, when searching for a horse for the Lone Ranger, he and Tonto come upon a wounded white stallion that they rescue from an irate buffalo. They nurture the horse back to health, and the Ranger gradually earns the horse's confidence and bestows the name Silver onto him. The two men drive to Colby on Silver and Scout to meet the Ranger's friend Jim Blane, who owns a buried silver mine; however, they discover that Cavendish and his men have been murdering and replacing important residents in order to take over the town, and are plotting to blame Blane for the killings. The Ranger and Tonto arrest Cavendish and several of his men with the assistance of Blane and the sheriff, but the remainder of the criminal gang arrives.
