In series three, Tommy suffered tragic consequences as a result of a war with the Changrettas, an Italian family. It began when Lizzie (Shelby Company secretary, John's ex, former sex worker, and current Tommy hook-up) was forbidden by the Peaky Blinders from seeing Angel Changretta. Since the Changrettas demanded that Tommy kill Danny Whizz-Bang in series one, after Danny accidentally killed one of their men during a psychotic PTSD episode, there had been bad blood between the families. The Blinders set fire to Angel's restaurant in order to prevent him from attending Tommy's wedding to Lizzie. When the Italians demanded an apology, John made threats, which escalated tensions between the parties to the point where John blinded Angel. While Polly and Arthur pleaded with John to make amends and apologize, Tommy sanctioned John's brutal attack and gave orders to seize two Italian-owned pubs. âIf we can,â he stated. In retaliation, a gunman was dispatched to the Shelby charity foundation fundraiser, where he shot and killed Grace, aiming for Tommy.
