Founded in 1963 to compete with established Ferrari, creator Ferruccio Lamborghini set out to create a polished grand touring automobile. Lamborghini saw fast expansion throughout the first decade of the firm's existence until the 1973 global financial crisis and oil crisis struck, putting the business into financial difficulties. Ferruccio sold the firm in 1974 to Georges-Henri Rossetti and Ren Leimer, who kept Lamborghini afloat for another four years until the company filed bankruptcy in 1978. In 1980, ownership was transferred once again to the Mimran brothers, who supervised the production of possibly the most famous Lamborghini of all time, the Countach. In 1987, the Chrysler Corporation acquired control, only to sell the firm in 1994 to Malaysian investment group Mycom Setdco and Indonesian conglomerate VâPower Corporation. They, too, lasted just a few years until Lamborghini was sold once again. The year was 1998, and the buyer was Volkswagen Group, who intended to integrate Lamborghini into the group's Audi business.
