Atraumatic bleeding into the subarachnoid space is most often caused by the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm. Aneurysms are localised dilatations of arteries, with the berry aneurysm and saccular aneurysms being the most often found intracranial types. Aneurysms are less often associated with abnormal hemodynamics caused by arteriovenous malformations, collagen-vascular disease, polycystic kidney disease, septic emboli, or neoplasms.
