The Best 13 Pictures Taken From The Moon - On August 23, 1966, the world obtained its first image of Earth from a spacecraft orbiting the Moon. The image was beamed to Earth by the Lunar Orbiter I and received at the NASA monitoring station in Robledo De Chavela, Spain, near Madrid. The photograph was obtained during the 16th orbit of the spacecraft. Photographer: NASA China has recently released a new set of images taken by its Chang'e 4 lunar mission and Yutu-2 rover. The new photographs provide the clearest view yet at the terrain of the moon's far side.
A US spacecraft captured the first image of the Moon. Ranger 7 captured this photograph, the first by a US spacecraft of the moon, on July 31, 1964, at 13:09 UT (9:09 AM EDT), just 17 minutes before landing the lunar surface. The imaged region is located at 13 S, 10 W and spans approximately 360 kilometers from top to bottom. The photographs, obtained two weeks ago from 13 to 15 miles above the moon's surface, show the landing locations for Apollo 12, 14, and 17. They provide a more defined appearance that clearly identifies man.
A total of 42 high-resolution and 187 medium-resolution pictures were captured and relayed to Earth, covering more than 5 million square kilometers of the Moon's surface, completing around 75% of the mission's objectives, however several of the early high-resolution photographs displayed considerable smearing. NASA's deep dive resource for lunar exploration, from astronauts to robotics, is Moon.nasa.gov.
